UPLB Media Relations: Increasing Impact, Communicating Excellence
by Juan Paolo A. Aquino

Nestled at the foot of majestic Mount Makiling, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) stands as a beacon of academic excellence in the country. Renowned for its contributions to research, innovation, and community development, UPLB has been a prominent fixture in local and international media, showcasing its myriad achievements and endeavors.

Media visibility is a powerful conduit for UPLB to share its triumphs, breakthroughs, and transformative initiatives with the world. From groundbreaking research findings to community outreach and extension programs, the university’s media coverage amplifies its impact and fosters engagement with diverse stakeholders.

UPLB participates in shaping public discourse on critical issues ranging from agriculture and environmental sustainability to public health and social justice through various media platforms, including traditional print, broadcast, and digital channels. By disseminating expert insights and research-driven perspectives, the university contributes to informed decision-making and societal progress.

As the main office responsible for media relations at UPLB, the Office of Public Relations (OPR) facilitated the guest appearance of UPLB experts on various radio and TV programs that are also broadcast through the Internet.

In the first quarter of 2024, several UPLB experts were featured and interviewed in major TV shows.

In February 2024, the Philippine Information Agency featured the 94th Anniversary of the UP Laguna-Quezon Land Grant. Members of the UP Agricultural and Applied Economics Circle or UP AAEC were also featured on the Business Roadshow of ANC or the ABS-CBN News Channel and DZRH’s Radyo Henyo in conjunction with the holding of  AGRIKONOMIYA.

AGRIKONOMIYA is a flagship event of UP Agricultural and Applied Economics that aims to bring together junior and senior high school students from various schools nationwide to participate in activities such as essay writing, debate, and agricultural resolutions pitch competitions.

In March 2024, Dr. Philip Alviola was interviewed by Born to be Wild regarding the Dry Spell or prolonged dry weather during El Niño. UPLB Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Janette Malata-Silva was interviewed in Teleradyo Serbisyo: Approve Yan about the SM Prime Scholarship. UPLB’s Green Mobility program was featured on TV5’s Frontline Pilipinas Weekend

Also, last March, DOSTv: Science for People interviewed Dr. Maria Catalina T. de Luna for their Expert Talk: Project Sigla regarding the UPLB BARKada at CATropa Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) Program. Dr. Lerma SJ. Maldia, director of the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems, was interviewed at ANC’s Business Roadshow to promote the 2024 iteration of Make It Makiling, which invites hikers and nature enthusiasts to visit Mount Makiling during Holy Week.

More recently, in April, the Philippine Information Agency covered the launching of the UPLB sculpture garden and the first anniversary of the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (UPLB-INREM) as an affiliate hub of the UP Resilience Institute. UPLB OPR coordinated the guesting of UP Open University Chancellor Dr. Melinda Bandalaria and also the faculty of Laguna State Polytechnic University Christian Paul P. de la Cruz and Cristopher Mendoza to invite interested parties to the 40th anniversary of the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc.

As UPLB continues to strive for excellence in teaching, research, and public service, its media visibility will remain integral to its mission of knowledge dissemination and societal impact. By leveraging the power of media to communicate its achievements, aspirations, and values, UPLB will continue to inspire and empower generations of scholars, innovators, and changemakers to create a better world.

UPLB’s media visibility not only showcases its contributions to technology and innovation but also amplifies its impact on society. Through strategic communication and engagement with diverse stakeholders, the university reinforces its position as a driving force for positive change, both locally and globally.
